NEW LIFE CHILDREN''''S CENTRES
Welcome to the New Life Children''''s Centres Website
The work of the New Life Children''''s Centres (NLCC) in The Gambia started in 1995, with the setting up of its first school at Kanefing, in the Serrekunda area.
Today there are 5 schools at:Kanefing, Tallinding, Jolakunda, Half-Dye and Manjai, providing education for more than 1200 children through our sponsorship programme.
The Gambia is the smallest country in West Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and completely surrounded by Senegal. The capital is Banjul. It is one of the poorest countries in Africa with most of the homes made of mud or concrete blocks with corrugated sheets.
It`s not unusual for the ceilings to be made of cardboard! Not much use in the heavy rainy seasons! The homes are generally without electricity and toilet facilities and water has to be fetched from a distance.
All five of the schools cover nursery and primary education with the newly opened Junior Secondary School at Kanefing providing education up to grades 7-9.
Soon we must be planning to build a Senior Secondary School to cater fro the higher grades. At present older students sponsored are sent to other Secondary Schools in the area with the fees being paid to that school.
Having our own Senior School will mean long term benefits for NLCC as Secondary School fees are very expensive.
In a country of 1.5 million with approximately half the population under 14, the average age being 17 and life expectancy just 50, the work of NLCC is making a huge difference in the lives of these African children.
Many of those who first joined back more than 10 years ago are still with us. Some of them are now themselves teaching in our schools.
Current funding is predominantly through individuals and the support of a number of churches. However as the work expands we are seeking external funding to help us to give educational opportunities, and a secure future for more children in The Gambia.
